If you want to discover some great culture during your holiday to Mexico, you will certainly enjoy Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city.

This area is rich in beautiful architecture, historical buildings and places of interest, and also has some great visitor attractions, shops and delicious food!

You also might like to take a holiday property rental here, so you can make the most of your stay in Guadalajara, which is the capital city of the state of Jalisco in Mexico.

Not surprisingly, there is plenty to see and do in this amazing city, with some definite must-sees.

The beautiful Guadalajara Cathedral is well worth a visit, as is Belen Cemetery, which has been turned into a museum. If you are keen on art, then make sure you see the superb Mexican murals by Jose Clemente Orozco at the Cabañas Cultural Institute, and also the Government Palace, which houses some fantastic murals by Jose Clemente Orozco, too.

There are also some family-friendly attractions in the area. There’s Guadalajara Zoo, Selva Mágica (an amusement park near the zoo) and Guadalajara Planetarium and Science Centre, which the kids will appreciate.

If you’re looking to see the sights of Guadalajara in a different way, you can take a ride in a horse drawn carriage! You can just sit back, enjoy the views and soak up the atmosphere of the city.

If you want to take a break from the sightseeing, why not visit Guadalajara’s Metropolitan Park, for example? It’s an ideal spot to sit and enjoy a picnic.

During your self catering holiday in Mexico, you will probably want to dine at a local restaurant and sample some traditional Mexican cuisine. There’s a good choice of restaurants here too.

Those who enjoy shopping also won’t be disappointed in this city, as there is an excellent range of shops on offer around here. If you’re looking for a handcrafted gift to take home, you should be able to find it here!

But for serious shopaholics, there’s Tlaquepaque, a suburb of Guadalajara. You will be spoilt for choice with the amazing selection of shops here. If you’re in no hurry and you love shopping, you may want to spend a day or more here!

With so much to see and do here, you probably won’t need to explore anywhere outside of the city. However, if time allows, there are some great places you can visit, which are in easy reach of Guadalajara.

One exciting attraction is the Tequila Express Tour. The fun starts in Guadalajara, where you catch a train to Amatitan. You can enjoy the famous Mexican drink Tequila, refreshments, snacks and music throughout the journey as you pass some beautiful countryside along the way. After arriving in Amatitan, you board a bus to Hacienda San José del Refugio, home of Herradura Tequila, for a tour. This is followed by a buffet lunch.

Other places which you might also want to visit from Guadalajara are Chapala (and Lake Chapala, Mexico’s largest lake!) and Ajijic. Why not discover the beauty of this area and enjoy a day trip or even a longer stay?

Guadalajara is an ideal holiday destination, whatever your age and taste. Whether you’re planning a relaxing break, a holiday rich in culture or a family vacation, you will have an enjoyable time in this amazing city and its surrounding area!

When one of our readers suggested the topic of food in the corporate world, my first thought was that such a feature would be not be appropriate for Ravenwerks. This is not a cooking show. We are committed to our clients’ success in business. Food is irrelevant.

After the first thirty seconds, however, it dawned on me. (Possibly because I was hungry at the time!!) We do so many other things that are much more expensive or risky to impress, inspire, comfort, and care for our clients, employees, and associates. Food is an elemental factor in everyone’s day. The corporate world is no exception. Unfortunately, we miss a lot of opportunities when we treat food as a mere distraction, rather than as a very integral opportunity for communication and relationships- the very fabric of business.

So, we went to John Cirio. Who better to address the uses and protocols of food in the corporate world than the man who has been the personal chef to four United States Presidents? More about our guest at the bottom of this article.

Why Bother With Food?

Paula-

What place does food have in the corporate environment?

John-

When you cut through all of the symbols that every culture places around food, presenting and sharing food with someone is a very primal, generous gesture. When you provide a high-quality food experience for someone, you promote a feeling of comfort and care. This brings home the symbolism- “this company or this person feeds me,” literally as well as metaphorically. The quality of the food and the presentation of it will subconciously, but very powerfully, promote a positive atmosphere.

Paula-

In what corporate settings can food be used? Are there any circumstances when food should not be included?

John-

Food is very effective in project kickoffs and status meetings, sales meetings, motivational meetings, informational presentations, and training sessions. Any time you particularly want or need to motivate or positively influence people.

Food can be served in any setting except the actual signings of papers and contracts. In any meetings where actual paperwork tasks are being performed, food should be in the background. It can be served very neatly on a side table, but all food items should be cleared before actual signing or handling of paper takes place. It’s very important that the person leading the meeting work closely with the caterer or chef to ensure that things go smoothly.

Case Studies

Paula-

Have you had a situation where the food served actually affected the outcome of a business situation?

John-

There was one occasion where my client was a motion picture company that was negotiating with a person that felt that he wasn’t being treated fairly. There had been quite a bit of antagonism, and this person had a reputation for being temperamental. The situation was an airplane flight on a DC-10 that was very nicely outfitted, but being on an aircraft does present some unique challenges.

I had done some research beforehand about this person’s home and past, and prepared a very comforting menu. I put a lot of emphasis on smells and aromas- I used some things specifically for smell- they weren’t even on the menu. I had bread baking in the oven long before dinner was to be served. It seemed to take his mind off the antagonism- he came to the kitchen to speak with me, and wanted to know what was on the menu.

After dinner, he was very relaxed and comfortable, and was talking about his parents and past. That was a good indication to me that my efforts had been successful. Food and aromas are very evocative of past memories and emotions.

Needless to say, the deal was closed favorably, and my clients were very pleased.

Paula-

Besides the food itself, how can food be used to create favorable environments and situations for the objectives you’re trying to accomplish?

John-

The chef or caterer can help arrange situations. One example- As the President, of course, you spend a lot of time in front of people, and that can get very tiring. President Nixon, in particular, liked to eat by himself occassionally. Of course, you have to arrange the room so that it doesn’t look like he’s off by himself- you have to set up tables so that he has some privacy and everyone is more interested in everything else going on.

There was another situation where my clients wanted to have a private conversation with a group of people, but didn’t want one particular woman to join them. I found out that this woman’s anniversary was coming up and I set up a special romantic table for her and her husband. She was delighted, and so was my client. The dining experience allowed my client to diplomatically arrange his opportunity to have the conversation he needed.

Chefs and caterers can be very adept and creating environments and situations that can be very helpful.

Practical Application

Paula-

One very common use of food in my environments are coffee and pastries in morning meetings. Is there anything you would suggest that’s convenient for a working session?

John-

It’s good to have an alternative to sweet pastries in the morning, especially if you’re going to need people to be focused and participating for several hours. I particularly like to serve a breakfast strudel- it’s a triangle of fillo dough with scrambled egg, bacon, or sausage made into triangles that can be eaten in about four bites. You can serve two of them very nicely on a nine-inch plate.

I serve three sauces with them- a Mexican salsa, a Hollandaise suace, and a cheese and chive sauce. This adds some variety and looks very nice on a side table with some your coffee and beverages, muffins (for those who must have sweets!) and some fresh fruit.

Paula-

What about in the afternoon when meetings start to drag?

John-

There are two reasons that people get tired and sluggish in the afternoon, and you need to know the circumstances to adjust for that. This is why it’s very important to work with the organizers to handle this correctly. Most people serve more sweets and soft drinks in the afternoon, but many times that will just give you an hour of energy before people are worse off than they were before.

If they’re tired because it’s been awhile since lunch (or they came straight from another meeting and haven’t eaten) then it’s good to get a 20-30 minute break between activities and bring out real sandwich trays- not the little ones, but some actual, substantial food. Meat-based open-face ones seem to do very well. Protien tends to react with insulin to level out blood sugar and keep it where it needs to be for at least a couple of hours.

If it’s the opposite reason- people are sluggish because they’re still digesting a heavy lunch, then something light and fruity works very well. As an alternative to candy and soft drinks, I suggest a shake bar- you can set up blenders, ice, fresh fruit, and so forth with a couple of people serving. This is a nice diversion, allows for some good conversation and a quick break between activities that gets people back and ready to be productive for the rest of the afternoon.

International Business

Paula-

Many companies are new at doing business internationally, and are entertaining clients, employees, and associates from different cultures. Are there any differences in food or presentation that should be taken into account with groups from particular areas?

John-

In general, people react favorably to good hospitality and good food presentation. It’s always good to offer a variety of food alternatives. One very common example is to be sure you offer a non-dairy creamer-
this accommodates both religious (Kosher) and dietary preferences. There are a couple of particulars that are good to keep in mind when entertaining people from different places:

Middle East-

It is good to be very sensitive to religious beliefs, and avoid pork products. Very elegant lamb dishes are usually received very well. It’s particularly important with this group to observe Kosher standards.

Asia-

It is very important to include translators in the dining group. Translators can be very helpful, not only in language, but social protocol. In many business settings, there is a translator sitting next to each participant.

The Americas-

Dairy products are very well received- cream-based sauces, butter, cheese, etc. by people from Central and South America. Such items are at a premium in those countries.

Europe-

No matter what the menu includes, presentation tends to be much more important to Europeans than to Americans.

Here are a few of our dining experiences during our week in Cancun. They include dinner at TGI Friday’s, breakfasts at the Sunset Lagoon Hotel, a burrito and Ceviche late at night, a department store cafeteria where I neglected to film everything but the menu (Swiss enchiladas, definitely weird) and cut most of that out to fit that ten minute limit. It’s a bit of a challenge to put a week of meals in a ten minute video, but I think it worked out after lots of sweating and struggling. There’s …

Skis and snowboards carefully tucked away for the night, now what do you do when the slopes are closed Get out and have fun in Breckenridge night life. Breckenridge is not only known for its Aspen Trees during fall, but most of all the world class ski slopes and resorts. Skiing or snowboarding is never the same in Breckenridge, but so is their night life. Within a block of Main Street, an array of gift shops, sports bars, restaurants, a theater and bars can keep you entertained while the wait for the slopes to open the next day. You will definitely have fun spending your time out in the town as you have in the slopes.

Whether you’re in the mood for dancing, sipping a martini or cosmo, or just hang out and people watch, Cecilia’s, Sherpa & Yeti’s, Salt Creek and the Liquid Lounge all offer a different theme on any given night. These clubs offer Dj’s or live bands. You can club hop and you surely find what scene you’re looking for. Great atmosphere for a night out with your friends. You can listen or groove to rock, techno, hip hop and of course country music.

Say you’re so tired from being out in the slopes all day and you just have to take that power nap, you don’t have to worry about being so late to catch dinner before all the restaurants close because luckily, most of the bars and restaurants in Breckenridge keep their kitchen open very late for the weary skier. If you love spicy food then Mi Casa is where you’ll probably end up, it’s a local Mexican restaurant; so order you favorite spicy Mexican food and get a shot of tequila. If you’re looking for a more laid back scene, go to the Breckenridge Brewery they brew an amazing beer. Breckenridge have several sports bars so you won’t have to miss the big game. Since Main Street hosts so many clubs, bars and restaurants all within a few paces from each other, it would be best to stay near this area in order to have access to such great spots within just walking distance of each other. A word to the wise, don’t drink too much too fast, you’ll find that alcohol affects you faster at 9600ft than it does at sea level.

On a romantic getaway with your special someone? And you’re looking for a place to have a romantic dinner then you can go to the Crown and the South Ridge Street Seafood Grille have unrivalled menus and unique atmosphere. Food tastes like heavenly you’ll come every night. If you want to have a truly special time with your special someone and you’re looking for a great place to have just that then you can go to the Blue River Bistro. The Bistro’s great atmosphere, together with its excellent wine list and superb menu is just the perfect place to be. Listen to a live band and complete the romantic night with a request to play your song. The Blue River Bistro is the place to be when you want a special night in Breckenridge.

Sure, the snow and the mountains will always be Breckenridge’s main attraction but there is always a place for you to enjoy at night when you’re off the mountain. Whether catching a movie or watching a play, fine dining with you special someone, or just having a good country dinner with family and friends, a great selection of places for your night palate. Breckenridge will always have an after-sundown spot for you.

McAllen is in Texas lush lower Rio Grande Valley. Its southern boundary is located about five miles from the US Mexico border, the Rio Grande River. McAllen is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. It is also the largest city in Hidalgo County.

Positive dates connected with McAllen are lost in the mists of antiquity. In the Ruth Clarks famous scrapbook. The majority of the opinion is that McAllen was founded in 1909 and incorporated February 21, 1911. James McAllen came to the Valley in the early 1850s from Edinburgh, Scotland. He owned 65,000 acres of land in the area.

It is noted for subtropical climate, access to Mexico and tourist facilities catering to thousands of visitors. It is also a winter resort and is known as the City of Palms, since 40 varieties of that tree flourish there.

It has grown and developed from an agricultural based economy to a strong retail, manufacturing and trade centre. It has always enjoyed strong economic impact from tourism dollars that come in the winter.

Its a great destination for birders and other nature oriented visitors. The McAllen and surrounding area is one of the most popular spots in the entire United States for year round nature and birding activities. It is positioned on the migratory path between North and South America, presenting unique and exciting birding and butterfly expeditions. The landscape hosts a diverse wildlife population.

It has over 550 restaurants. Be sure and explore some of the home town proprietors who serve food from around the world, from the Middle East to China and Italy to Japan, and of course Mexico and USA. There is sure to be one to suit your taste or cravings.

Allow plenty of time to enjoy the enticement of Mexico. Bustling Reynosa, or laid back Nuevo Progreso, both are just minutes away.

Explore the shops and markets for their endless possibilities jewellery, ceramics, hand woven fabrics and hand blown glass, the unique creations of skilled Mexican craftsman. A great place to shop for different things.

Anzalduas Park and Dam A diversion dam used to divert water from the Rio Grande to a large irrigation canal on the Mexican side. The national boundary line runs through the centre of the dam. The park has many shade trees, picnic tables, boating facilities and a pavilion overlooking the Rio Grande. A great place to enjoy.

Its a great place to come and a great place to be see for yourself. Any time of year is worth a vist. However summmer time is ideal because there are great parks to explore.

Thousands of students each year go to culinary school to earn a degree in the culinary arts so they can pursue a cooking career. However, this is not the case for all of those individuals who receive culinary training. Some see cooking as an art in which they would like to earn a living, and others see it as a hobby that they can use to bond with their family. So whether individuals are looking for a career at a five star restaurant, want to impress guests at a dinner party or simply want to liven up the kitchen at home, classes in culinary arts can help anyone pursue their dreams.

For years fathers and sons have bonded over going to a football or baseball game and mothers and daughters have bonded by shopping or having a day of beauty. Now everyone in the family can bond over learning how to cook. The culinary arts is no longer just for aspiring chefs. It is for families that are looking for something they can share with one another and bring them closer together. Culinary training can be simple enough for children of all ages to take joy in. Children can have fun learning to make the foods that they love to eat.

A big dilemma for most parents is getting their children to eat healthy foods without putting up a fight. One way to get children to eat healthy foods and enjoy them is by getting them involved in the process of preparing and cooking the food. With culinary training even the least experienced cook can bond with their children by learning to create kid friendly dishes. Children will learn that healthy food can be fun to eat and appetizing as well.

Another great aspect of learning how to cook with the family is the different themes that can be incorporated into the kitchen. Whatever the time of year or whatever the holiday, there is a theme and food menu to match it. With culinary training, families can learn creative ways to incorporate themes into your meals that everyone can enjoy. Around the Mexican holiday of Cinco De Mayo, try your hand at quesadillas, nachos muchachos and tacos. Others might enjoy a summertime meal of pizza poppers, sandwiches and frozen pops. Children will love making Shamrock cookies on St. Patrick’s Day, along with other Irish treats.

Along with learning how to cook different treats and making healthy food appetizing, children can also learn the importance of safety and sanitation. Culinary training is not complete without learning the safety precautions that are necessary to make the cooking experience fun and enjoyable. Safety measures such as wearing the appropriate clothing and using caution around hot surfaces will play an important role in the culinary training process. Parents can find comfort in that fact that their children are learning kitchen safety while having fun cooking.

While children are learning how to cook their favorite treats, parents can try their hand at culinary training. Parents can spend time together by taking cooking classes as a couple, while their children are learning as well. Courses at culinary arts schools are offered on the weekend to accommodate working individuals. Parents can learn to make their own themed meals, such French and Italian influences, incorporating wine or holiday favorites. For those ambitious individuals, wedding cake decorating certificate programs are also available. So not only can children and parents learn how to cook, a skill that will be useful to them throughout life, but they can bond during the process.

As I was having lunch last week, my cell phone was ringing off the hook. Before it started to ring, though, I ducked into a Taco Bell to grab a quick lunch. I was starving and was having lunch late as it is. As the crew member behind the counter gave me my tray of food, it that was right at the same time that all the voice mails that I left earlier that day started to be returned.

Ok, I thought, looks like lunch can wait a little longer. However, I didn’t take the calls because I had to. I took them because I wanted to. The people calling me back were calling back on some very important issues, and I didn’t want them or I to wait another minute to discuss them.

When it comes to your business or service, have you ever felt that way? Like you must answer that phone right now? Well, personally, most times I’ll just eat my lunch and return my calls later. Today that was not to be, and the result is a large part of the rest of this article.

When I was on the phone, instead of looking down at my food, which would only make me more hungry, I was looking around the restaurant. I saw soda machines, I saw people sitting down and eating, afraid to make eye contact with anyone. I saw the hanging signs that were marketing the latest concoction that could be loosely translated into Mexican food. Thus far, nothing remarkable. Just another lunch at another Taco Bell, nothing to see here.

How untrue that turned out to be! See, I had a glimpse of my million dollar lesson when I ordered my food, but I didn’t realize it yet. It wasn’t until I kept looking around and observing the space around me. Then, I was able to put it all together with what I experienced when I ordered my food.

Combining the two have created a million dollar lesson that I would like to share with you. So, let me start from the beginning of the lesson.

We already established that I was pretty hungry and late for lunch. So, as I walk up the counter, a very large man, probaly tall enough to play any one of the more physical sports you care to name, greets me with the biggest smile I’d seen in weeks. In a very genuine and sincere tone, he welcomes me to Taco Bell and asks what he can get for me.

Now, a smiling welcome and the obligatory asking what someone behind the counter can get for me is not usually remarkable. Except for two things. One, he said it with such sincerity, it seemed like it was his first day on the job and he was just so happy to be there. Translation: Enthusiasm!

Two, he gave the people before me, and the people after me, the same heartfelt sincere greeting. Translation: Consistency!

As my order was ready and he gave me my food, I was already on the phone. So, I grabbed my lunch and sat at a table where I could see the order counter.

As I talked, not many customers walked in. However, an elder man walked in with a cane and leaned on the rail. As the crew member greeted him in the consistently sincere style, the gentleman let him know that he was still browsing the menu. When the elder gentleman was ready to order, he placed his order and accepted his drink cup from the crew member.

What happened next really impressed the heck out of me. The crew member, seeing that this gentleman had a cane suggested that the elder gentleman get his drink and have a seat anywhere he liked. The crew member then said that he would personally bring the elder gentleman’s meal.

Again, this may not be remarkable to most, as many of may (or may not, from what I’ve seen lately) open a door for someone, or do something helpful of some sort. But then, I put all the pieces together.

Here’s my analysis, for everything I witnessed while at lunch at Taco Bell.

As I think about the various fast food restaurants, Taco Bell rarely stands out as a “heckuva” place to receive great food and great service. This is not to bash Taco Bell, and the fact remains that most people don’t go there for the warm smiles and friendly greetings. Especially when their main slogan has to do with a “4th Meal”, which usually comes aftera night of some kind of partying.

So, in putting all this together, I wanted to highlight a few things with my analysis:

The person behind the counter was big enough to probably walk on to any NFL training camp and at least get a shot at trying out. Therefore, he didn’t have to be nice.

The person behind the counter was treating everyone with the same genuine “glad to see you!” demeanor, creating a very infectious atmosphere. This is written about extensively in How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. The foremost expert on human relations and public speaking.

By doing those two things, I was both glad I chose to eat there and glad to part with my money, which was, by the way, about $6 Bucks.

The person behind the counter didn’t have to offer to take the elder gentleman his tray, but he did so anyway. There are no posted policies requiring such behavior; therefore his actions were true and from the heart, with no hidden agenda.

The person behind the counter was most likely not making more than $9 or $10 per hour, maybe even less. However, his attitude, enthusiasm, consistency, and outward gratitude to be there and serving his customers made him worth a whole heck of a lot more than whatever his rate of pay may happen to be. Most of all, he made me feel like a million bucks, even if wasn’t making a million bucks.

The crew member I witnessed that day last week, taught me a million dollar lesson, and the price of admission was my $6 combo meal, which allowed me to sit down and enjoy the lesson that was brought right before my very eyes.

If that crew member were to continue every single day the way he did that way, he will undoubtedly become a millionaire himself. Simply because the service and gratitude on a level of his is both rare, and very contagious.

Think about your business for a moment. If you and your staff conveyed sincerity, service, gratitude, humility, and enthusiasm, would your customers or clients ever have a problem giving you their money? Well, I wonder how much better that Taco Bell is doing by having that man on their team, working for a real bargain, and making everyone feel special and welcome.

If my $6 helped me learn a million dollar lesson, and you learned a similar one for free simply by reading this, then hopefully we are well on our way to a success bigger than just money.

Thanks for reading and for doing something positive today.

Can you really get pizza in Pattaya, Thailand? Absolutely. Is it any good? Superb! Does this sound strange to you? It shouldn’t. Some of the finest chefs in the world have made their homes in Thailand and have set up shop cooking some of the finest cuisine in the world.

I love Thai food and eat my share of rice and noodles with all the other spicy goodies that go along with them, but I also like to sample food from around the world. Pattaya is the perfect place to do this.

You can go to Don Joe’s on Walking Street for an excellent pizza, The Sportsman Club for a superb “Full English” breakfast, or to the Big Horn restaurant for a 1 Kilogram steak.

If you have a craving for American food, it is readily available at Bob’s BBQ and also at the New Orleans Café – ribs that will make your mouth water all the way home.

German, Swiss and Belgian foods are readily available too. It seems like there is another fine restaurant every 10 feet in Pattaya. Mexican food can be had at the Tequila Reef and also at the Blue Parrot. You would never know that you are in Thailand with all the fine choices at these great restaurants.

And, if it is seafood that you crave, just walk along Beach Road or Walking Street and you will find quite a few restaurants with seafood on ice or swimming around waiting for you to make your catch. King’s Seafood is one of the better restaurants with excellent tiger prawns and a beautiful view of the Gulf of Siam.

So, don’t go to Thailand if you are planning on losing any weight. Go there to have a great vacation and a fine sampling of some of the culinary arts of Asia.
